1862 Scrapbook belonging to William and Mrs. Frear

CLICK HERE FOR New Photographs THESE ARE NOT DIGITAL as is the Troy, New York Photograph Above

Scrapbook contains 115 original Signatures of Civil War Congressmen and Mrs. Frear

You can view signatures by clicking on following Links and enlarge them:

Scrapbook has one of a few photographs in existence of St. Joseph University before it burned down in 1862.  This scrapbook has about 10 to 15 photographs of friends and many of ladies possibly Mrs. Frear.  The rarity of the photograph above and the 115 signature dated before or during the Civil War makes this a gold mine for historical purposes.   What makes this a value book is not only the Troy University book but that each Congressman helped President Abraham Lincoln in their own way through the Civil War. Lord Lyon's list for 35.00 dollars. Owen Lovejoy is listed and he was Lincoln's best friend in Congress. In 1862 Lovejoy was responsible for freeing slaves in the District of Columbia. Owen's brother Elijah was the first abolitionist to be murdered - because he ran a printing press against Slavery. Sander's 6th Book on autographs has many of these Congressmen listed. Actual photograph of Tom Thumb and his wife.

One could write a book on all of these individuals and their roles for the worst battle in US history. I have began the book for ya by gathering photographs and some of their histories. Go to link. For photographs of Congressmen and  biographical sketch visit website http://ciajfk.com/Civil-War-Congress.html

"Dear Mr. Adamson,

Mari Shopsis forwarded your e-mail to me. The photo is definitely of Troy
and would have been taken somewhere between 1858 and May 10, 1862 when there
was a devastating fire in Troy that destroyed hundreds of buildings and
about 20 lives lost.
The large building at the top of the hill is the former Troy University,
then St. Joseph's University it was completed in 1858.

We have so few images of the city before the great fire, is it possible for
you to do a higher resolution scan of that to send to us?

Do you have any other photographs of Troy in the scrapbook...

I put the word out to the local Civil War roundtable members, someone may be
interested in purchasing the scrapbook... We unfortunately to not have the
funds to purchase that or we would have wanted to purchase it for our
collection...

I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
Kathryn Sheehan"

This SCARCE 8" x 10" scrapbook/autograph album had been put together and was owned by WILLIAM H. FREAR, who was eldest in a family of eight children of William and Deborah A. (Davis) Frear, and was born in Coxsackie, New York, March 29, 1841. He received a good education in the common school and the Coxsackie Academy, and while young showed marked proficiency. At the age of sixteen, choosing a business life, he secured a clerkship in a store in his native village, and after two years' service, in 1859 he became a clerk of John Flagg, then a leading merchant of Troy, N. Y. During his six years' clerkship with Mr. Flagg he mastered every detail of the dry-goods trade, developed superior
aptitude for business, and won the unlimited confidence of his employer.

Portrait of William H. Frear -- Scrapbook has several photos of Mr. Frear.

In 1864 he married Fannie M., daughter of Charles Wright, of Pittsfield, Mass. In 1865, William H. Frear became a mercantile partner of Mr. Haverly, under the firm name of Haverly & Frear. In keeping with the times, on the inside of the third page, reads, "The stars and stripes forever".

The note on the last page is a pasted note reads, "Sir, Please deliver the Enclosed to Montgomery Blair, Esq.", and is signed , but I cannot discern the signature.

Montgomery Blair was a politician and lawyer from Maryland. He was a loyal member of the
Cabinet of Abraham Lincoln during the American Civil War. Blair was hot-tempered, and in
1864 he launched an all-out attack against Republican liberals. My have times changed. He was the 20th United
States Postmaster General.
