Madame Wong Was Still Cooking at 100
Years of Age -- Shrimp and Peas
What will you be doing
at the Age of 100 years? I thought it important to capture Madame
Wong on film and submitted to the Today Show,
yet it was not excepted. Nevertheless Mad ame
S.T. Ting Wong is a person worthy of note!
On October 5, 2003, Madame
Wong turned 100 years of age. Madame Wong has been known for
many years as a cooking teacher in the Hollywood area. In 1924-26
Madame Wong attended Columbia University Cooking School till
1926. Madame Wong has taught cooking for the past 60 years. She
taught cooking in Shang hai, China the first 30 years and in
the United States for the next 30 years. Her students have included
Barbra Streisand, Debbie Reynolds, Sidney Pointier, Louie Nye,Warren
Beatty, Monty Hall, Sally Struthers, Jayne Meadows, (Jane's husband Steve Allen attended
my father's wedding and were long time friends as disc-jockeys); James Garner, Danny Kaye and many
others. At 97 years of
age, I remember going out to dinner with aunt Gretchen and Madame
Wong and it was dark in the Chinese Restaurant and at the end
we were given fortune cookies. I could not read mine with glasses
and I was 45 years of age, Madame Wong with out glasses took the small red piece
of paper and read it verbatium. Was I surprised. My aunt and
Madame Wong went to China five times. They were the best of friends
to read more on aunt Gretchen go to bottom of Harold Adamson
link.
Madame Wong said two things
throughout her life kept her alive till 100, "1). Eating
lots of vegtables; 2). and not saying negative things about people."
Sylvia Schulman helped Madame S.T. Wong write the book and she
was a student of Madame Wong's and an excellent cook in her own
right, is married to Samuel Schulman, President of the Seattle
Supersonics. Her culinary talents have been highly acclaimed
by Coach Bill Russell and others in teh basketball world as well
as by many well-known entertainers. The book is illustrated by
Linda Jarvis.
Colonel Andrew Amerson was
the interviewer of this VHS video. Mr. Amerson was a former prosecutor
for the California Attorney General's Office and for the Judge
Advocate General's office.
